I always had a thing about flies and spiders, so if I spot any around the house, I keep a fixed beady eye on them, just in case they should end up under my feathers. Urgh!
For some weeks, there had been a pair of spiders residing in my owner’s bathroom. Yes, there was a large female with long gangly legs, and a much smaller male. Neither of them seemed to do very much; they literally just ‘hung around’ near the top of the wall above the basin. That is until one morning, when I flew in as usual, and there was only one spider left. The female was still there, looking quite pleased with herself, but where the male had once resided, there was nothing left except a set of dangling legs. She’d devoured his body during the night. In hindsight, I reckon they could have done with a spot of counselling, or at least, a referral to Relate, but now it was all too late. The male spider had fallen in love with a ‘Femme Fatale’ and paid a dreadful price for it.
Humans have an expression about ‘love being blind’, but actually, the whole process of life is about making good decisions on an almost daily basis. We’ve all been given free will, so that it’s up to us how we choose to navigate our lives. And if we don’t choose wisely, we can so easily come to grief.
Humans, just like spiders, are basically flawed. They make lots of bad decisions on a regular basis. And that’s why everyone could do with a spot of help. Lots of us have ‘an inner sense,’ or an inner instinct. But how often do we listen to it? And is that instinct guided by the presence of God inside us? Because it’s only when we’ve welcomed God into our inner being that we stand a better chance of avoiding Life’s pitfalls. Or in the male spider’s case, Life’s femme fatales! She’s definitely not going anywhere near my feathers!
“Nothing harms or destroys us but the wrong use that liberty of choice which God has entrusted to us.”
(William Law: [1686 – 1761]: Church of England priest)
“Attitude is a choice.
Happiness is a choice.
Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice.
Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice.
Whatever choice you make makes you.
Choose wisely.”
(Roy T. Bennett: [Dates unknown]: Current American author and speaker.
Now, just think a moment and answer the question, ‘What shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?’
(Dwight L. Moody: [1837 – 1899]: Prominent American evangelist)
“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault….”
(James 1:5)
“But the wisdom that comes from Heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”
