Humans like to build their own flying machines because God never gave them their own set of wings. And not content with their metal ‘aeroplanes,’ they’ve even gone so far as build their own rockets and to launch them into space. In fact, right now, -even as I tap away on the keyboard with my beak, -there’s a bunch of humans up there on a mission to the moon. Well, I say each to their own. Personally, I wouldn’t be that bothered about making a half million-mile return trip to view a barren lump of rock.
But you know something? In a strange sort of way, I reckon that their mission to the moon will teach them a whole lot more about our planet Earth. Because all of a sudden, they’re seeing the Earth from a whole new perspective. And one of the astronauts has already hinted at this. Victor Glover has said how small and beautiful the Earth looks amidst the huge dark void of open space. It seems to float in a vast chasm of nothingness and is an oasis of life in the midst of emptiness. And, momentarily placing his hands together as if in prayer, he said that all humans on Earth are sharing the experience of being and existing together. They’re all going through the same thing, so why is there so much division amongst humanity instead of a spirit of togetherness?
Yes, the beauty of the Earth seen from space belies all of the conflict, suffering and strife that’s taking place in the lives of all humanity. And it could all be so very different. Mankind could be so very different. The world’s human leaders could be so very different. And the Earth could be a planet overflowing with love and compassion, and tolerance and peace. And here, in a nutshell, is the tragedy of mankind. Humans have brought all this upon themselves by shutting out the presence and wisdom of Jesus and God, and by allowing their own flawed judgements and temptations to hold sway. And despite all this, Jesus was still prepared to die on the cross to save everyone from themselves. And if it takes a rocket in space to help everyone see this, then maybe Artemis II is just what the world needs!
