In my book which came out a few years ago, I wrote a piece about feathers. And that’s not very surprising given that I’m a very beautiful parrot! It was entitled: ‘Is a feather simply a feather, or is it really a work of art?’ And that’s because feathers really are quite amazing things. In fact, birds like me have seven different types, each of which serves a different purpose. For example, my durable, shaped wing feathers have an interlocking microstructure which allows me to achieve maximum downdraft. And my stiff tail feathers which are arranged in a fan shape are for precise steering in flight. Then I have my downy feathers (also known as ‘my undies’), which are for warmth; I have contour feathers which help to streamline my body in flight and filoplumes which serve rather like a set of whiskers around my beak. I really am quite a work of art.
Many human scientists believe that feathers originally evolved from scales, -yes, those hard, rough, unrefined knobbly things which used to cover dinosaurs. And all this has made me realise that in the hands of our Master Creator, just about anything and everything is possible. And that includes Salvation for all that was seemingly lost. You see, if God can set a process of evolution in place that turns scales into feathers, then just think what He can achieve with each of us as individuals. Because we all get things wrong; we all go off the rails from time to time, and yet the evolution of feathers shows that something incredibly beautiful can come out of anything, -or anyone. And maybe that’s how the vast majority of us alive today will eventually be transformed into beings fit for Heaven. And that’s the most astonishingly wonderful thought to keep in mind, especially on those days when we let ourselves down……….
