A couple of weeks ago, I confessed to having once stormed the dog bowl and to having eaten up all of the dogfood while our very elderly labrador passively looked on. And I know it was a rather shameful thing to have done, especially as Lucy’s now 99 in human years. But I have to tell you that I am definitely not the main culprit in the matter. Certainly not, because we still have a serial offender!
You see, we have two free-range chickens wandering around the garden. And one of them -called Harriet, -is a bit above her station. She charges at the other birds when they’re trying to peck up crumbs below the bird feeders. She charges at any squirrels that dare to cross the lawn. And, if my human owner is ever careless enough to leave the back door open -even just a crack, -Harriet turns into a chicken version of Usain Bolt and is straight into the kitchen and snatching out chunks of dog food before you can even say the word ‘cluck!’ And what makes everything a hundred times worse is that because Lucy the labrador now has a more delicate digestive system, she’s fed fresh chicken, meaning that Harriet the chicken is a cannibal bird! (Yes, I sense your sharp intake of breath at that revelation!) And as a consequence of this sorry state of affairs, a brand-new daily sport has come into being; yes, it involves chasing Harriet round and round the kitchen and then flipping her out into the garden using the end of a garishly coloured feather duster. From her point-of-view, this is the ultimate weapon of doom! And unless she changes her ways, I fear that one day in the future, her sins will come home to roost!
“People who count their chickens before they are hatched act very wisely because chickens run about so absurdly that it’s impossible to count them accurately.” (Oscar Wilde: [1854-1900]: Prominent Irish playwright, poet and novelist).

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, tp put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds.” (Ephesians 4:22-24)
