I’m not exactly a Nightingale when it comes to singing. I can whistle a tune or mimic calls, but that’s about my limit. But I love to hear human songs and music on the radio. And the other day, I heard Leonard Cohen’s song “Anthem” being played. And for me, there’s one very special lyric in this song. It goes like this:
“There is a crack, a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”
Cracks are imperfections. They have the potential to become something serious. We’d all love to exist in a world in which everything was smooth, solid and secure. But unfortunately, this world’s not like that. And sometimes, a menacing crack can develop into a vast chasm, without an available bridge to span the gap.
In my last blog, I wrote about my owner’s friend David.
He started out with headaches, and then found himself needing major brain surgery. The initial “crack” became a huge chasm for him and his loved ones. And he had no choice but to step down into the chasm, and out of his comfort zone. In fact, his whole family had to do this alongside him. And it's one of the hardest things that we’ll ever have to do during our lives. But once we’ve taken the plunge and are down there, -that’s when we’re in the zone where God’s light shines most brightly. The same light that we might not have noticed when our lives were running smoothly.
God won’t necessarily make all things better, there and then. It’s not always an instant quick fix. We’re in a different era to the time when Jesus walked the earth and performed His miracles. But by being down in the chasm, we have the chance to see everything from a new perspective as the light of Heaven shines down. And to sense God’s presence as we had never sensed it before.
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way, and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea……” (Psalm 46:1-2)
So for those like David and his family, all around the world right now, -step forwards into the chasm where the Lord is waiting for you:
“Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
Step forwards so His light can shine down upon you……….
Amen.
