I’m not a great fan of mini-beasts and insects. No, I’m definitely not. They give me the heebie-jeebies! I always think that flies will get in under my feathers, so if I see any anywhere near me, I hiss at them and try to chase them away. So, you can imagine how disconcerted I was to find out that my human owner has just finished constructing an insect hotel. I really don’t know what’s come over him. A parrot hotel would have been fine, but no, he’s just made a special hotel to cater for all of the insects and mini-beasts and creepy crawlies that I don’t like!

I had been aware that he was up to something because of all of the banging and crashing sounds coming from outside. He’s not very practical and I think it probably went wrong on quite a few occasions. For example, I don’t think that half of the roof was meant to fly off and end up smashing a brand-new flowerpot positioned underneath. But anyway, he persevered, and the new hotel has gradually taken shape. And I have to admit that annoying as my owner can be, he does have one enduring quality. He never gives up. He perseveres, even when things keep going wrong, or when his own incompetence gets in the way. And so finally, the garish yellow, high-rise accommodation, complete with fir cone penthouse apartments, stands proudly by the side of our house.

We all have to learn to persevere at different times of our lives. I have had to live with my owner for some 25 years and put up with all of his eccentric behaviour. And of course, as Christians, we are asked to keep going even when this world seems to be throwing everything it has at us. And we do so because we believe that something a whole lot better awaits. That our struggles and difficulties and frustrations will all, one day, be worthwhile, because Jesus will ultimately save us. So, I’ll keep that thought in mind whenever my owner begins his next mad project!

“God never said that the journey would be easy, but He did say that the arrival would be worthwhile.”

(Max Lucado: [1955 – present]: American Church Minister, evangelist and author)

“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.”

(James 1:12)
