Coco Calling No.185: A Parrot’s Guide to Sorting Out the Troubles of the Human World

I’ve had a very curious week. Because human news is normally all about humans. It’s very rare for any kind of parrot to achieve national publicity. But somehow, that’s what’s just happened to me. Stories about me appeared in both “The Times” and “Daily Mirror” newspapers. And then completely out of the blue, my owner and I were invited to travel to the London studios of ITV to appear on the “This Morning” show. Yes, we were all very excited and getting ready to go when some human called Putin decided to invade the Ukraine. This meant that our slot was postponed. ITV were even going to put us up in an all-expenses-paid hotel, and I was just about to check that they had some parrot food available when everything was put on hold.

Vladimir Putin represents the dark side of humanity. He’s driven by ruthless self-interest, and many would call him evil. So what about me? Although I have my many faults, I hope I represent the more virtuous side of parrots. The purpose of my weekly blogs and book is to try to make our world a better place for all by focussing on what really matters, -the love and presence of God. Unfortunately, when a world leader or an army or a whole society function without love or compassion or moral scruples, then human suffering inevitably results. The force of evil in many human beings is rather like a coiled spring; it’s waiting for an opportunity to be unleashed to wreak havoc in the world around. It can only be kept in check if a majority of humans adhere to the basic ethos of the Christian faith. The darkest moments in human history have always resulted when God has been left out of the equation.

“In each of us, two natures are at war – the good and the evil. All our lives the fight goes on between them, and one of them must conquer. But in our own hands lies the power to choose…”

(Robert Louis Stevenson: 1850-1894: Scottish novelist & poet).

Lots of Western countries have constitutions and social codes that are based upon the Christian faith. “Thou shalt not murder.” “Thou shalt not steal.” “Thou shalt not give false testimony against thy neighbour.” “Love thy neighbour as thyself.” These basic Christian laws are designed to save humanity and creation from so much needless suffering.

Where I live in the Western world, humans are obsessed with money, profit and wealth. And this is in itself, a massive problem. Because it’s encouraged the evil seed in Putin to sprout and to grow and to flourish. And here’s why. If somebody had spread Novichok on the doorknob of the house where I live, or assassinated humans by using radioactive poison in my vicinity, I wouldn’t want anything further to do with them. But because so many humans worship all of the Russian money that swills around, when these things really did occur in the human world, very little was done about it. You see, for the humans in my country, money was far more important than morality. And so the seed of Putin’s evil has been allowed to grow into the monstrous machine that has now invaded the Ukraine. And the same kind of thing will occur with China unless the Western world wakes up and places morality ahead of money and profit.

I’m only one small parrot. I live in a little house, within a small village that very few people have heard of. Why should anyone listen to me? After all, I’m only a bird-brain!

“Poor God, how often He is blamed for all the suffering in the world. It’s like praising Satan for allowing all the good that happens.”

(E. A. Bucchianeri: Irish / Italian / American author: Taken from “Brushstrokes of a Gadfly”).

“Put on the full armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes”. (Ephesians 6:11).

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

(Romans 12:21).
